Lao Dong Newspaper – After more than 2 months of operation, UNION MART at the social housing apartment complex of Hoa Khanh Industrial Park, Lien Chieu District (Da Nang) has shown that this is a good model, a practical encouragement from the Trade Union organization for workers facing difficulties during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Good and practical model
The word “difficult” is probably not enough to describe what union members and workers in Da Nang have experienced in the past 2 years of being negatively affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Understanding the difficulties of workers, the Industrial Park and Industrial Park Trade Union has nurtured the idea of forming a subsidized supermarket for workers to send them a practical word of encouragement.
After many efforts, the supermarket “Union Mart – Union Welfare” was established by the Industrial Park & Industrial Park Trade Union in coordination with Union Inc. to improve the welfare of union members and workers with nearly 20 stalls selling a full range of dry and fresh foods and essential consumer goods.
As one of the first customers, Ms. Le Thi Van, a worker at Pi Vina Company Limited, was very happy to have a supermarket that sells subsidized products to workers. “During the pandemic, it was difficult to buy goods, I used to wish for a place that sold cheap, good quality products to workers. Now that has come true. I will support this supermarket regularly and hope that this place will have many discount programs for workers,” Ms. Van said.
Ms. Duong Thi Be, a worker at Matrix Vietnam Co., Ltd., also chose many products after receiving a 200,000 VND voucher from the “Union Social Security Bag” program. “The food here is very fresh and delicious. The prices for us workers are at a support level, so I was able to buy many necessary items. This is a reliable address for my family to visit and shop regularly,” Ms. Be shared.
Deserves to be replicated
After more than 2 months of operation, Union Mart has partly met the needs of workers in the difficult area. Mr. Nguyen Thanh Trung, Chairman of the Industrial Park & Industrial Park Trade Union, said: “We hope that this will be a place to serve the long-term needs of purchasing food and essential goods with guaranteed quality and stable prices for workers in the apartment complex and neighboring residential areas”.
In particular,Union Inc. is also committed to improving quality to bring better products at affordable prices to workers as well as building ready-made food combos that ensure nutrition in the supermarket’s product chain, and at the same time, taking profits from the supermarket to build cultural institutions to serve workers’ families in the area.
The supermarket model “Union Mart – Union Welfare” is a great effort of the Industrial Park & Industrial Park Trade Union and its partners to bring practical benefits to workers. This is a worthy model for trade unions at all levels to learn from, make efforts to find partners, and then replicate to serve the shopping needs of workers, especially at a time when workers’ lives are facing many difficulties, job loss, underemployment, and serious income decline due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.
